These are the processed and ultra-processed ingredients that show up in everyday products. What they are, where they hide, what the research says, and what you can use instead. No fear. Just facts.

Harmful Ingredients

Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame, Sucralose)

Description:

Aspartame and sucralose are two of the most common no-calorie artificial sweeteners. Aspartame (you may see it as “NutraSweet” or “Equal”) is roughly 200 times sweeter than sugar; sucralose (“Splenda”) is made by chemically modifying sugar and is about 600 times sweeter. Both deliver sweetness with little or no calories, which is why they show up in “diet,” “sugar-free,” and “zero” products.

Common places you will spot them (check for “aspartame” or “sucralose” on the label):

  • Diet sodas and “zero sugar” soft drinks

  • Sugar-free gum and mints

  • Tabletop sweetener packets (the blue and yellow packets)

  • “Light” or “no sugar added” yogurts and gelatin cups

  • Protein powders and bars marketed as low sugar

  • Flavored waters and sugar-free drink mixes

Look for: “aspartame” or “sucralose” in the ingredient list, often near the end. Aspartame products also carry a phenylalanine warning for people with PKU.

Health Impact:

Here is the grounded version:

  • In 2023 the World Health Organization’s cancer agency (IARC) classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B), its lowest-certainty warning tier. In the same review, the WHO/FAO expert committee (JECFA) kept the existing acceptable daily intake, meaning typical intake was not flagged as a clear risk.

  • Some research has linked sucralose to changes in the gut microbiome, and a 2023 laboratory study raised questions about a compound formed when it is digested. Regulators still list it as permitted at approved levels.

  • Separately, the WHO advised in 2023 that non-sugar sweeteners are not helpful for long-term weight control, and observational studies have associated high intake with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Association is not proof of cause.

What that means for DD users: the evidence is mixed rather than alarming. These are additives with no nutritional upside, and the more useful goal is usually to dial down how sweet you need things to taste, rather than trading one intense sweetener for another.

Healthier Alternatives:

Best simple swap rule: get sweetness from whole foods first, and treat any sweetener, natural or artificial, as a small add-on rather than the main event.

Options that tend to work well:

  • Sparkling water with muddled fruit, citrus, or a splash of 100% juice in place of diet soda

  • Whole fruit to satisfy a sweet craving, since it brings fiber and water along with the sugar

  • Small amounts of less-processed sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or dates when you do want to sweeten something

  • If you prefer a zero-calorie option, monk fruit or stevia are plant-derived choices, though they are still concentrated sweeteners

Shopping shortcut: when two products look similar, pick the one that reaches for real ingredients instead of a sweetener blend, and let your palate reset over a few weeks.
