The Ingredients Nobody Explains to You.
BHA is a synthetic antioxidant added to fats and oils to slow the rancidity that turns food stale. It has been in the American food supply since the 1940s, and it is the close chemical relative of BHT, which has its own entry on this list. The two are often used together. What makes BHA unusual is not its chemistry. It is the paperwork. The same US government that permits BHA in food has also listed it, since 1991, as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.
Under 21 CFR 172.110, US limits are set per food, for example 50 parts per million in dry breakfast cereals and dehydrated potato shreds, and 2 parts per million in prepared beverages and desserts.
Three parts of the same government disagree about this one. That is the story, and it is worth understanding before anything else.
The National Toxicology Program, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, lists BHA as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” It has held that listing since the Sixth Report on Carcinogens in 1991. The basis is animal evidence: dietary BHA “caused benign and malignant tumors of the forestomach (papilloma and squamous-cell carcinoma) in rats of both sexes and in male mice and hamsters.”
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified BHA as Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans, in 1987.
California acted on that. BHA has been on the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer since 1 January 1990, with the listing basis recorded as IARC, and a safe harbour level of 4,000 micrograms per day.
The Food and Drug Administration permits it. BHA remains an approved food additive under 21 CFR 172.110, and NTP’s own profile notes it “is generally recognized as safe for use in food when the total of antioxidants is not greater than 0.02% of fat or oil content.”
So one federal programme calls it a probable carcinogen, one state requires it to be treated as a carcinogen, and the federal food regulator allows it in your cereal. All three positions are current.
The honest counter-argument, which we are not going to hide. The tumours appeared in the forestomach, an organ humans do not have. NTP states plainly that “the data available from epidemiological studies are inadequate to evaluate the relationship between human cancer and exposure specifically to BHA,” and notes a later study that found “no increase in risk at typical levels of dietary intake of BHA.” The European Union authorises BHA as E 320, and Japan lists it as designated additive No. 362. Neither has banned it. Anyone telling you BHA is banned in Europe is wrong.
Where Diet Discipline stands
We think the forestomach argument is weaker than it sounds, and the benefit is thinner than the debate suggests.
Start with what BHA is for. It is not a nutrient and it is not a food safety measure. It keeps fats from going rancid, which extends shelf life. That is a real commercial benefit and a very small consumer one, and it is achievable other ways. Tocopherols and rosemary extract already do this job in plenty of products on the same shelf.
Now set that against the record. California looked at the IARC finding and concluded people should be warned. FDA looked at the same finding and concluded nothing needed to change. Same evidence, opposite calls about what the public deserves to know. When a regulator’s own hazard programme flags something and its food programme does not act, the gap is worth noticing rather than explaining away.
Our position, stated as our opinion: when a compound causes tumours in three species and its job is keeping oil fresh, waiting for human epidemiology to settle is the wrong way round. Reduce it where it is easy to reduce, which for BHA is most places. This is not a reason for alarm about food you have already eaten. It is a reason to read a label.
